In Cunewalde, located about 70 km eastwards of Dresden, you can find the largest Lutheran village church  of Germany. This church  was completed in 1793 with a total number of  2.632 Seats in it.

In the middle of the 18th century, the valley of Cunewalde had much to suffer.  Wars and pestilence claimed a lot of victims.  When a new flourishing was beginning, the old church was found in bad condition and to small for the rising congregation.  Therefore it was decided to build a new large church.

During the years 1781 to 1793 the new building was under construction, although lack of money forced to many breaks. Finally the first service was celebrated on the 4. sunday of Advent 1793 . At this time the interior of the church  was quite poor.

During the following hundred years it was being improved:

In 1817: three large chandeliers of Bohemian crystal were installed.  At Christmas 1817
they shone for the first time.

In 1840, the organ with 3 manuals and 35 registers
was completed.

The constructor of the organ, Christian Friedrich Reiss,
built this instrument in the manner of the
famous Gottfried Silbermann.

Thanks to reconstruction-work done by the  Eule company (Bautzen), you can hear the genuine baroque sound until
this very day.

The 100th anniversary gave reason for reshaping the church  externally and internally. The 30 m (100 ft.) high tower was increased to 61 m
(200 ft.) Three stained glass windows  were added to the Interior.  Friedrich Arnold, an architect from Dresden, redesigned the whole Interior in the style of classizism.

The Upper Lusatia and Saxony

The valley of Cunewalde is one of the most exciting valleys of Upper Lusatia. From here you can reach easily the towns of the former "Six-Towns-Alliance" (Bautzen, Loebau, Goerlitz, Zittau, Kamenz  as well
as Lauban in Poland).

You can walk to our hills  Bieleboh ( in Sorabian: the white God) and Czorneboh (in Sorabian: the black God). When the weather is clear, the picturesque view will fascinate you.

Do you want to stay over night in the valley of Cunewalde? No problem! The friendly people at the information office will be glad to help you.
